DESCRIPTION:Poppy Day is celebrated in countries around the world. The American Legion Family brought National Poppy Day® to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day\, as National Poppy Day. \nOn the Friday before Memorial Day\, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation’s uniform. \nThe red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. \nLed by the American Legion Auxiliary\, each year members of The American Legion Family distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans\, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

SUMMARY:National Veterans Creative Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Nationwide\, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities use the creative arts to help Veterans with their rehabilitation goals. This annual competition recognizes the progress and recovery made through that therapy and raises the visibility of the creative achievements of our nation’s Veterans. \nAcross the country each year\, Veterans enrolled at VA health care facilities compete in a local creative arts competition. The competition includes categories in the visual arts division that range from oil painting to leatherwork to paint-by-number kits. In addition\, there are categories in creative writing as well as the performing arts of dance\, drama\, and music. Local creative arts competition top winning entries advance to a national judging process and first\, second and third place entries are determined at the national level. First place winning Veterans are invited to attend the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival hosted by a different VA facility each year. \nSince 2000\, the Auxiliary has co-presented NVCAF\, alongside the Department of Veterans Affairs. Carrying out the Auxiliary’s mission of Service Not Self\, members\, units\, and departments support the local competitions\, the Festival\, and make generous monetary donations to help carry out this event.

SUMMARY:ALA Girls Nation
DESCRIPTION:American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students entering their senior year of high school. This weeklong event gives participants a firsthand experience with practical insight into how the federal government works. More than 7\,500 students have experienced ALA Girls Nation since it was founded in 1947. \nTwo students are chosen from each ALA Girls State program. The participants are known as “senators.” During ALA Girls Nation in Washington\, D.C.\, senators participate in a mock legislature. They are responsible for submitting bills and resolutions\, participating in senate sessions\, and electing officials such as president and vice president. \nParticipants leave ALA Girls Nation with leadership lessons for life and an understanding of the fundamentals of U.S. government\, along with the rights\, privileges\, and responsibilities of citizens. This seven-day experience has laid the foundation of thousands of bright futures in not only public service\, but other careers as well. Some notable industries include government\, military\, law\, education\, and media. \nALA Girls Nation connects students with their peers from across the country\, allowing them a unique opportunity to spend time with others who share common interests and those who have different perspectives from their own. The participants leave Washington\, D.C. with a deeper understanding of government\, a renewed sense of patriotism\, and an appreciation for veterans. \nWhile in D.C.\, the senators participate in field trips to visit Capitol Hill\, historical Washington monuments\, and Arlington National Cemetery. \nThe ALA Girls State and ALA Girls Nation programs are privately funded and presented by members of the American Legion Auxiliary.
